abstract = "The process of clearing the dense forests in Serra do Mar escarps
in the Paraty region can add more instability to the natural
landslides susceptibility of the municipality. Aiming to provide
instruments and alert the government, is presented here an
evolution of Landslides Susceptibility Maps of the years 1973,
1986, 1993 and 2008. The methodology used was based on the IPTs
methodology, combining in GIS environment, landsliderelated
factors as slope, aspect, curvature, geology, geologic structures
and land use. For the 1973 scenario, the municipality area was
divided in 43.72% of low susceptibility, 46.85% of medium
susceptibility and 9.43% of the high susceptibility areas. At
1986, 40.37%, 49.54% and 10.09% was occupied by low, medium and
high susceptibility respectively and at 1993, 40.05%, 49.69% and
10.26% respectively. Finally, the 2008 scenario shows 39.16% for
the low susceptibility area, 50.18% for the medium and 10.66% for
the high susceptibility. Since 1973, with the opening of
Rio-Santos highway (BR-101), there is a continuous shrinkage of
low susceptibility areas and a growth of middle and high
susceptibility landslides areas. The forested areas have declined
in all susceptibility classes, while the human occupation has been
growing within them. Currently the landslides risk is not a
serious problem, except in the vicinity of roads and access
routes, which can be found scars from old and recent landslides.
But with the non-planning human occupation expansion the situation
may evolve dangerously. This paper is like a warning to local
government.",
